Background:Orlistat (Xenical) is a prescription medicine that is primarily used to reduce obesity-related health risks. Methods:We conducted a randomized controlled trial that compared Orlistat (Xenical) to placebo in Thai adults with a BMI of 25 or more with a BMI of less than 50 kg/m2 or BMI of <50 kg/m2.
Results:Orlistat was significantly better than placebo in both weight loss (WLD) and weight maintenance (WMS) measures in a subset of Thai adult patients with a BMI of 25 or more with a BMI of <50 kg/m2 or BMI of >50 kg/m2, but not in a subset of Thai adults with a BMI of less than 50 kg/m2 with a BMI of >50 kg/m2.
Conclusion:Orlistat is superior to placebo in weight loss, weight maintenance and weight loss/loss.
